Valhalla Schools Foundation and WestHelp Partnership Team Up to Award More Than $32,000 in Mini-Grants to Valhalla Teachers

The Valhalla Schools Foundation and the WestHelp Partnership are pleased to announce the recipients of the Foundation’s 2004-05 Teacher Mini-Grants:

At the Virginia Road School

  • The kindergarten teaching team at Virginia Road School, a grant of $2,176 for “Tadpoles to Frogs” science curriculum, which will include the purchase of six River Tank Aquariums and infiltration systems to enhance their study of the life cycle of the Leopard Tadpole.

  • The first-grade teaching team at Virginia Road School, a grant of $975 for the scientific program,  “Nutty Nutrients,” a 90-minute in-house presentation on diet, nutrition and how it affects health. The presentation will include hands-“experiments” as students learn about the food pyramid and about making healthy choices.

  • Gregory McCrea, music teacher at Virginia Road School, a grant of $2,399 to enhance the music curriculum by introducing  “Our American Musical Heritage,” a program that will feature the recordings of VRES students singing traditional American songs, playing games and reciting poetry. Classes will build a collections of their recordings, and final songs chosen from each class will be recorded on a master CD that will be sold to cover production costs.

  • Kelly Doherty, Resource Room teacher at Virginia Road School, a grant of $2,500 for purchase of a Smartboard.

  • Laura Kulers, ESL teacher at Virginia Road School, a grant of $2,781 for the purchase of Quantum LeapPad units to supplement a thematic vocabulary curriculum and reinforce reading strategies and skills through the “Leap Into Literacy” program.

At the Kensico School

  • Patrick Ward, Mona Voelkel, Bill Wright, Kathy Adams and Sandro Prosperino, at the Kensico School, $3,062 for digital multimedia equipment that will enhance the English language arts curriculum by permitting students to write skits, plays, and documentaries that will be performed and digitally videotaped. Performances will be downloaded and edited by students on computers, then displayed during an “Oscar Night” at the school.

  • Glenn Carrozza and Melissa Salles, fifth-grade teachers at Kensico School, a grant of $1,228 for Classroom Jeopardy programs and equipment geared toward fifth-grade students.

  • Matthew Curran, fifth grade teacher at Kensico School, $2,631 for the purchase of Smartboard.

  • Linda Carpentieri, Mona Voelkel, and Bill Wright of Kensico School, for their grant proposal, “Family Reading Nights.” This program will feature three theme-based Family Reading Nights, during which time families will share the joy of reading. The program advocates family reading time and will provide exposure to Kensico’s inviting school environment and state-of-the-art library media center. We are pleased to award this program with a $725 grant. The same teaching team was awarded a $500 grant in 2003-04 to launch “Family Reading Nights.”

  • Pat Trehy, fifth-grade teacher at Kensico School, a grant of $2,500 to enhance the 5th grade science curriculum in geology by introducing students to “Geology Rocks,” which includes a field trip to the Franklin Mineral Museum in Franklin, N.J., where more than 4,000 minerals are on display.

At Valhalla Middle School

  • Roxanne Franquelli, foreign language teacher at Valhalla Middle School, a grant of $700 for the purchase of two digital cameras for the foreign language program, to be used on field trips, to build foreign language scrapbooks and albums, and to introduce different cultures.

  • Lisa Patek and Sybil Daniel, ESL teachers at Valhalla Middle/High School, a grant of $1027 for the purchase of Letterville Carbo recorded books and short stories to dramatically improve student reading.

  • Kerry Morrison, speech-language therapist at Valhalla Middle/High School, a grant of $1,551 for Classroom Jeopardy, an interactive program based on the television game show that can be individualized based on classroom and student skills. The grant will permit students to participate in science, social studies and math “games,” which include cartridges, scoreboards and remote buzzers. The grant also will provide the program with equipment that includes a television and a DVD/VCR.

At Valhalla High School

  • Dr. Cathleen Hannigan, English teacher at Valhalla High School, a grant of $2,301 for the purchase of a Smartboard, which permits students and teachers to highlight, edit and annotate text that is projected onto a white board in front of a class.

  • John Philbin, teacher at Valhalla High School, $3,800 for purchase of laptop computer and LCD projector for use in his senior year Entrepreneurship/Economics class. The equipment will help students create and present their business plans using PowerPoint presentations, both in the classroom and in competitions.

  • Irene Torrieri, math teacher at Valhalla High School, a grant of $2,400 for equipment and software that will enhance math applications. Using a projector, students and teachers will be able to view and interact with software to create and solve problems. Software will permit students to view three-dimensional math problems, and AP Statistics students to use ActivStats.


The Valhalla Schools Foundation presented the Valhalla Board of Education with a lump-sum donation of $17,784 at the Board’s June 29th meeting.
