Our Accomplishments 2002-2003
The Valhalla Schools Foundation has
awarded more than $10,000 in teacher grants. In 2002-2003,
the following grants were awarded to teachers in the District for
innovative programs:
At the Virginia Road School
The Age of the Dinosaurs Funding for
the second-grade teaching team to attend a professional development
workshop offered by the American Museum of Natural History. $875
AlphaSmarts 3000 Keyboards With our funds, portable
electronic notepads were purchased to assist students with delayed
fine motor skills and other writing deficits. $1,354
Food Festival Partial funding was provided to support
the expansion of the Nutritional Unit offered in the First Grade
curriculum. $600
At the Kensico School
Easy Reader Books Books were purchased that are of
high interest to children who are not reading on grade level. $750
Louis R. Cappelli Foundation Grant This outside grant,
secured by the Foundation, provides the Kensico School with an audio
library for social studies and language arts. This library will
permit struggling readers to keep pace with grade-level curriculum.

At Valhalla Middle School
Bullying Prevention Workshop Funding was provided
for six teachers to attend a one-day workshop on Bullying Prevention
hosted by BOCES. $450
Journalism/Newspaper Writing Funding for the purchase
of tape recorders to enhance the interviewing and transcription
skills of the Language Arts and School Newspaper students.
At Valhalla High School
Graphing Calculator View Screens Our grant will help
teachers purchase display packages that will allow them to more
effectively instruct students in the use of TI-83 and TI-89 graphing
calculators. $840
Junior Great Books Club Partial funding was awarded
to launch a new after-school club for 9th and 10th grade students.
This program is a strong, inquiry-based language arts club that
combines interpretive discussion and activities with the study of
outstanding literature. $1,200
District-Wide
Automated External Defibrillator Training Funding
to purchase two training models of the Automated External Defibrillator
and to train school nurses and coaches in the use of the cardiac
device, now required in all public schools. $650
